John Adams and Minimalism

3. What characteristics do Minimalism in the visual arts and Minimalism in music have in common?

Although they developed in different artistic disciplines, visual and musical Minimalism share several important characteristics: repetition, simplicity, limited materials, and an emphasis on structure rather than personal expression.

Visual artists often repeat basic geometric shapes, while composers repeat short musical patterns or rhythmic figures. In both cases, small variations can become surprisingly significant.

Perhaps most importantly, both movements invite us to experience familiar elements in new ways. Rather than overwhelming us with complexity, they encourage us to notice what happens when seemingly simple ideas are repeated, rearranged, or gradually transformed.
