2. Although Bonn was a small city, it held an important position: what was this?
3. What three events made the year 1792 a critical year in the life of Beethoven?
Bonn was the seat of the Archbishop of Cologne, who was one of the seven original princes of the Holy Roman Empire. These princes (both secular and ecclesiastical) were responsible for electing the Holy Roman Emperor, and thus held significant power. Shown here is a map of the Holy Roman Empire at the time Beethoven was 18 years old. Note the incredible patchwork of small states and principalities. NOTE: I realize it is impossible to make anything out on this map, but you get the idea!
